Malaysia BLIA youths are holding a seminar with the theme of "Together Within a Circle". By holding hands, it signifies cooperation and working together harmoniously.
As human beings, some of us are very extreme. Our ideology could be either too left or too right. Some of us identify people by status and divide others into different distinct classes. Some of us are very rigid; there is no compromise as our ways of doing things are usually very prejudiced and disciplined. Fortunately, there are people who are accommodating and flexible; as long as actions are wholesome and righteous they are happy. That is what lives should be in this world.
There is a Chinese saying, "A person cannot be too square"-meaning being rigid in personality. If one's life were a piece of timber, it could easily be saw into long, short, square, or rectangular shape. But to make it round is more time-consuming. Similarly, it is more difficult for a person to be wholesome and perfect.
If you ask, "What is the shape of the sun?" The answer is round. How about the moon and our planet? The answer is still the same. A lot of household articles that we come across like water pipes, pot, dining table, are round in shape, including our so-called round-table conference. Things that are square, rectangular or hexagonal have sharp edges and corners. When personalities are full of edges and spikes, conflicts arise when these people interact with others in their daily lives. But if they are flexible, (e.g., round, be it oblong, parabolic etc.), they can easily mingle and be accepted everywhere.
Our concept of time has neither a beginning nor an end. All year round, we have the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. IN a day, we have the 12-hour clock that keeps on repeating itself, In human life, we experience the cycle of birth, old age, sickness and death, which we take as rebirth in our impermanent world. Lives go on, like the wheels of a vehicle that spin endlessly in a long, endless journey. But our lives will be less complicated when we are more aware of our daily speech uttered and action taken.
In Chinese culture, being round has important meanings. Things that are complete, perfect and flawless are always described as round. This is applicable to our daily lives and in arts like singing and calligraphy. In the universe, our round earth is surrounded by other planets and the sky beyond. Our five continents are represented by 5 color-rings on the Olympic flag. If we can purify it with righteousness, loving-kindness and equanimity, then we are starting our lives on the right footing.
To make this world beautiful, we should seek and work towards roundness (wholesome), truth, kindness, purity and equality. We hope our young friends will begin their lives by living harmoniously with their parents, family members and extending this to the societal responsibilities outside their home. Let us face challenges as countless rounds of circles, stacking on top of one another. Let walk courageously and firmly these circles of lives.
